Retail sales in the United States showed a marked increase in July, rising by 0.5% (after 0.3% in June), and 0.3% excluding gasoline, according tothe Commerce Department. This is the largest increase in retail salesacross the Atlantic since last March.

Sales increased in line with expectations after rising 0.3% in June (revised from 0.1%). Retail sales excluding cars rose 0.5% well above the 0.2% expected by analysts.
